Issa's Haiku

butterflies

In spring the snow melts and flowers bloom. Issa and other poets filled their notebooks with haiku about cherry blossoms, plum blossoms and flowers like wisteria.

The frog, croaking his mating calls, became another spring "season word" in haiku—a favorite topic for Issa. Japanese nightingales (uguisu) sang, butterflies flew, and Issa enjoyed fresh spring breezes.
